China consumes the most pineapples, with an annual consumption of 2.2 million metric tons, followed by Brazil, India, and the United States. Global demand is expected to reach 22 million metric tons by 2026, growing by just 0.1% from current levels. Since 2017, demand has declined by 0.3% annually. Thailand had the highest per capita consumption at 30 kg per person, followed by the Philippines (21 kg) and Taiwan (17 kg). China saw the most significant growth in pineapple consumption from 2013 to 2018.
What is the Origin of the Pineapple?
Pineapple originated in South America, specifically in Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. Pineapple was cultivated as early as 1200 BC in Peru and later by the Mayas and Aztecs in Mexico. By the late 1400s, it was widely grown and a key part of the Mesoamerican diet. Christopher Columbus came across pineapple in 1493 in Guadeloupe (in the West Indies) and introduced it to Spain. The Spanish called it “piña” due to its pine cone-like shape. By the 16th century, European greenhouses allowed for pineapple cultivation, and quickly became popular across Western Europe.
